Why your cotton pillowcase could be undoing your hair care routine

Are you investing in expensive hair care products? We all do it. We try product after product, hoping it will finally give us the perfect hair we’ve always dreamed of. And some of them really do work.

As I've got older, I’ve definitely found myself investing more in hair care products, especially to deal with increased dryness, frizz, and dullness. I want products that hydrate, add shine, and leave my hair feeling smooth and lustrous.

Picture of multiple hair products stacked on the side of the sink. Products range from those improving issues such as volume, smoothness, shine and anti-frizz.

For all the products I’ve tried, one simple change has made the biggest difference in recent months - sleeping on a pure silk pillowcase. I sleep on a MYRN Silk pillowcase every night and I would never go back. The difference in smoothness and shine, is so noticeable, I even take it on holiday with me.

The hair care step most people are missing

It’s easy to focus on what we do to our hair when we are styling it for the day, but what happens at night matters just as much. If you’re sleeping on a cotton pillowcase, it could be working against everything that you're trying to achieve through adding expensive hair products and time spent styling.

Cotton has short, rough fibres so it creates friction between your pillowcase and your hair while you sleep. That means more tangling, more frizz, and less of the smooth finish you were aiming for through styling or hair care products. Cotton is also more absorbent than silk, meaning it pulls both natural moisture and those expensive additions away from your hair strands. Your hair should be able to rest and restore while you sleep and a silk pillowcase allows you to do this more effectively.

So even if you’re using great hair products, your pillowcase might be undoing the effect.

What changed when I switched to silk

I’ve been sleeping on a MYRN Silk pillowcase consistently for the last six months, and it’s made a noticeable difference. Now, when I wake up, I only need a small amount of serum to reshape my long, fine hair, and that’s usually it.

If you have curly hair or you’ve styled your hair the day before, sleeping on a silk pillowcase helps hold your hair's shape and bounce much better than cotton, which leaves your hair looking flat or frizzy in the morning.

Even after one night sleeping with silk, you’ll notice your hair feels smoother and less tangled.

The longer-term difference

Over time, I’ve noticed a real improvement in the overall condition of my hair. It feels softer, looks shinier and stays cleaner for longer. No product has ever had the same impact as a silk pillowcase and I've tried almost everything. Plus silk is so easy, no fussing with masks or treatments or risking buying expensive products not working.

That last part has made a bigger difference than I expected. Washing my hair less often means less heat styling, which naturally helps protect my hair's health.

It’s not a magic fix, but it’s easily been the most effective change I’ve made to my haircare routine. This is why I would never travel without my MYRN Silk pillowcase stored safely in my luggage.
